EDUC8243.MD1 Identifying an Emerged Technology

A fairly recent technology that has emerged and is beginning to shape how students process information in a logical, meaningful way, is exposure to coding, the use of scripts, mathematical concepts, and scientific investigation to create product-based knowledge.

Challenges associated with using basic coding to teach is the teachers have very little knowledge of how coding works, and its implications for learning and skills development. The concept of coding is seen in the context of ‘gaming’ which has not been adopted as a viable teaching method, simply because many teachers would find it difficult to ‘police’ student activity on the internet. Students would really need to fully understand the purpose for learning how to code, before they begin exploring it.

Pitfalls of this technology are that with the limited resources

available to schools, much emphasis is put on STEM programs that basically allow students to investigate subject matter content using the computer, with little to no time to investigate the involvement of codes and scripts for everyday computer use. Students are learning what content they need to be successful in math and science, but not being schooled on the engineering piece to learning. Many teachers would say this is as it should be, since not all kids want to become engineers. But there is so much more to learning how to code.

In order for schools to adopt the learning of code would not be additional funding, as there are many free, open source, resources for this. The way to impress upon schools the importance of learning how to code replies on the existence of a strong school-community network, where representatives from the business sector educate schools on the importance of understanding how coding impacts major professions (medicine, engineering, advertising, and service oriented jobs.
